It's also important to note where the reading is taken. On the 1.6TD
manifold, I'm told pre-turbo will read from 100-200F hotter than post-turbo.
My 1.6TD in an '88 Westy will hit 1500F pre-turbo at 12psi boost very
quickly, at which point I back off to around 1300F max on long climbs (over
the Rockies, etc), which also helps keep the oil temps under control (I
still peak at around 260F on climbs). I'm using a smaller K14 turbo which
spools faster. No problems after about 30k kms since installing new rings on
a tired old engine (now over 400k on the block & stock pistons).

I have also read (mostly on the TDI-Conversion group) that the newer TDI
turbos are quite happy running much higher temps than the old IDI turbos.
