[Vwdiesel] Not Diesel, 70 VW bug motor install not going in...

The motor is in.  I found a REAL German muffler from the other 1970 bug resto
project I have been involved with for 4 years now.  It harly has any rust on
it.  Crazy clean.
Anyway, compared this to my aftermarket muffler on the bug motor that won't go
back in, sure enough, the muffler is more then an inch wider.
so, took the saw zaw and did some trimming to that muffler and removed some of
the lips of body panels back by where the muffler will sit.
All good now, the motor is in.  Boy, what a job this was.
Most of time killers were doing it all by myself and having no lift.

Thanks all for your suggestions, alignment is Key.
Now to get it running.

"I had a 60 beetle.  I swapped the 36hp motor and trans for a 1600 with trans.
This "package" was longer than original and I had to trim up the back tin.  Also
the heater boxes were different and the firewall interefered, so I had to remove
the whole exhaust before removing the engine.  This took a 15 minute or less job
to a couple hours.  But couple hour drives went to 15 minute ones!  ;)"

This is my issue, the aftermarket muffler is hanging up on aftermarket
body panels that were welding in years ago.  Now I remember why I had removed
the muffler to remove the motor and must have had it off the last time I
installed the engine as well, but that was years ago and many brain cells have
past away since then.

time to trim the metal back there and get this done right.  no more taking the
muffler back off....arg.

Hmm...  It seems like if the flywheel is halfway in then probably the input
shaft should be contacting the clutch.  So turning the motor was my first
thought, but you say you did that.

You did remember to remove the alignment tool, right?  :)

The clutch throwout bearing is in, right?  (Like there is nothing holding the
clutch cable down, or the arm not blocked from retracting somehow?)  I could see
that not allowing you to push the engine back.

Check the front (= toward front of car) of the heaterboxes.  They might be
caught up in the firewall, or caught on the tubes that go toward the front of
the car.

Also, I found an ATV jack was spaced just right to fit the sides of the engine
case on an air cooled VW.  Also, it is handy to use for removing/installing the
transmission in a watercooled VW.  Much more stable holding it than a regular
jack.
