Brian wins the cigar!  I replaced the tensioner and the idler (it was 
cheap) and it went back to being smooth as rails.

I'm still tempted to replace the alternator clutch, but I really should 
start trying to not fix what's not broken.  It's just that the stuff 
that works is always easier to fix than all of the stuff that really is 
broken.
