[Vwdiesel] Tranny bearing noise??

In the 89 JettaTD, my replacement for Goldie (May She Rust In Peace), when
idling in neutral, and warm, there is a "jingling" sound from the tranny.
Stops when the clutch is depressed.

The car has about 250,000km on it, Don't think the engine or tranny has ever
been out of it.

I have set the clutch free travel correctly, changed the tranny oil, used
90-120 all summer, will go back to 80-90 for the winter.

I had goldie for 500,000km, same tranny, no repairs, 2 engines.
I could discern a small amount of the same jingle on her's before I yanked
the engine/tranny before scrapping her, but not nearly as loud as the "new" car.

Don't think it's the throwout as it is silent with clutch disengaged.
Only heard in neutral, clutch engaged, with engine idling, tranny internals
rotating.

Clutches and shifts with no problems, and I can't hear it in any gear while
driving.

Has to be the input shaft, or gears mounted on it. Could it be gearsets on
the output shaft that would be revolving on the output shaft when in neutral?

Might be the 5th gearset, which is supposed to be vulnerable to low oil
situations. When I got the car, I replaced all the lubricants, and drained
the expected amounts, so the tranny was not dry at that time.
With the heavy oil in it, it is quiet at startup, and returns when the
tranny is completely warmed up.

I have never done any internal work on 020 trannys, so don't have much of an
idea what it could be.

It has not got any worse in about 30,000km, just embarassing at drive-thru's
and waiting for lights to change.

Your thoughts please.

Sandy
