Hi Folks:
I really haven't seen a lot of far travelers mentioned in this
thread. I judge and exhibit poultry I drive all over on judging assignments
or to show my birds. I don't see many old water-cooled VWs on the road any
more. A few Rabbit cars and pickups, occasionally a Jetta but almost never a
Dasher which is what I drive most.
In the last 2 1/2 years here is a list of my rigs and some of their
trips. Daily I use one or the other of these rigs.
1981 Dasher 1.6 N/A 5spd diesel station wagon
1-Lincoln Nebraska
2-College Station Texas
3-Gila Bend Arizona
4-Newcastle Oklahoma
5-Numerious trips to California
Put it on cruse at 65 mph with decent conditions and it is an honest 50mpg
car
Lowest mileage ever 42mpg into a booming headwind in 4th gear
Best mileage ever over 300 miles up the Columbia river George on I-84 from
Portland Oregon to Twin Falls Idaho with a big booming tailwind 63.5mpg
1981 Dasher 4 door 1.6 N/A diesel (tall 87 VW Fox 4spd)
1- an 8800 mile trip that included stops in Montana, Indiana, Virginia,
Maryland, Indiana, Kentucky, and home by way of Southern California. Average
fuel mileage for the whole trip 49.5
2- BC Canada, Victoria Island and the lower mainland.
1981 Rabbit gas pickup FF 5spd 1.8 gas approx 125hp
1- Shawnee Oklahoma
2- BC Canada
3- Middle California a few times
My wife drives a 1983 VW Rabbit GTI as her daily driver but it
rarely gets farther afield than Oregon.
