I guess spring is closer in shape to a greek omega character:

Metal track on the left is above the spring and the end piece (sticking up) is what holds 
the tray fully open as I recall, recess on the other end of the track holds it closed and 
to remove the tray, you depress the end of the spring (sticking out of the right hand 
tray) to get it past that upper track.
