Bill,
I agree with Brian for th source of your problems. I suspect the glowplug 
system. It isthe  behaviour of the relay timer, whichis being caused by the 
sender in the end of the head giving the I'm warm enough not to need glow 
too easily. It's a design fault,across the mk2 stuff  but  did seem 
variable.
What I would do, is start her up again let her warm up, and then attempt to 
start as before.
As soon as this starting problem rears it's ugly head.
Stop get out of the car and use a single jump lead and clamp to the positive 
on the battery and onto #1 glowplug. Run round and start her up.
Get out and remove the jump lead.
Now turn off.
Then unplug glowplug sender lead on the end of the engine.
If after a rest this helps with starting, then leave it off.
With it unplugged the g/p relay will always think the engine is cold, and 
give full amount of glow.
