[Vwdiesel] Injectors?

Definitely, if the belt is old, and maybe a tad loose, the occasional skip
or stumble at idle can cause it to jump a tooth. Sounds like yours has.
You really need to pull the belt guard and inspect some things. Firstly, be
certain the belt is good. If you changed it recently, inspect for damage,
oil, etc.. If you haven't changed it within a known time period, then just
change it if possible. Really sucks to have it go out on you at highway
speeds. It's never pretty.

Yes, all night. Won't start below freezing. And you have an interesting
point. Just came back from a short test drive. Still smokes, blueish..
But I've noticed that while it still has a "skip" in the idle, it idles
better with the cold start knob pulled out (at normal operating
temperature). If I push it in, the idle is rough to the point of it
occationally stalling. Would that indicate a jumped belt? I have to add,
it leaks oil severely, needing a quart every 500 miles.

You let it idle all night?

I would check to make sure the timing belt has not jumped a tooth at the
pump.

I must add, I had let it sit idling overnight (temps just below freezing)
and this morning went to fill the tank. So even when it's warm, it doesn't
idle smoothly... And smokes constant black smoke. But not nearly as bad as
it is now... Whitish blueish smoke. I will try to warm it up again, but the
fact that it doesn't run smoothly anymore when warm couldn't be just glow
plugs, right?

You may have voltage to the glow plug bus, but if one or more plugs are
burned out, it can
behave like that. On my old '81, it turned out I had one bad plug and it
was a bit hard
to start in the cold or at higher elevations, but not bad. Then had a 2nd
plug go out and
it was nearly impossible to get running. Tested each plug and then found
the problems:

I did not suspect plugs at first because the set in there was recently
replaced (under a
year old), but they were an off brand. Replaced with Bosch plugs and never
had a problem
again.
