[Vwdiesel] mkII diesel valve adjustment

I would beg to differ with the hydraulic lifter is better assumption, The
solid lifter with pucks and discs for adjustments is a much better way to
adjust valves than hydraulic lifters. Once you set the valves right with
solids you will probably be needing to do a new timing belt before you need
to adjust the valves. Since you don't depend on oil pressure to adjust
valves the solids are much more reliable. I believe the only reason VW
changed from solid lifters to hydraulic was to save on the cost of
installation at the factory. Any moron can place 8 hydraulic lifters in a
head with no learning curve. To measure clearance and use the right disc
takes a good mechanic a fair piece of time. Solid lifters and A1's or B1's
forever. I have at the present time a diesel Rabbit pickup, Two diesel
Dashers, and a turbo diesel 1.6 I installed in a 1990 Fox. My wife has a
1983 Rabbit GTI with a gas 1800. All have solid lifters and all the diesels
get 50 MPG or close to that and the GTI on gas gets 30 MPG Why do I need a
new car? Why would I want hydraulic lifters?

You make it sound like the MK2 diesel is the car to have.... Which brings
up an interesting point. The MK1 was produced in South Africa up until the
end of the 2009 model year. The MK2 is still produced in China. Is it
finally time to give up on the MK1's?
What do you think?

Aside from the vanagon, the mk2 engines had hydraulic lifters that don't
require adjustment.
