FYI - I cut a deal with my mechanic to split the scrap value of the car, so
it's officially gone. Thanks again to all who replied.

Joe, I know a big diesel guy that is retired and may be interested in the
car for parts. His name is Jim.
HE is close to you, very close. Dover, PA

I will call him to see if he has any interest and get back to you.

Well, the worst has occured. My earlier message chain (injectors?) resulted
in my taking the old Rabbit to a trusted garage to have the timing belt
replaced. Yesterday I received the news that it wouldn't hold time.
Apparently not only is the engine originally out of a Dasher, but someone
had attemped to create a second keyway in the crank to repair the timing
belt pully which had apparently rendered the original keyway useless. This
"rigged" repair was apparently held together with locktite. Long story
short, it won't stay in time. There is no way to correctly repair this
thing anymore short of a crankcase replacement, which is absolutely out of
the question not just due to financial considerations but the fact that the
body is nearly rusted away to nothing.

My second problem (yes, there's more) is I'm 250 miles from home. So in
spite of this car having a 4 year old injector pump (estimated age), 5 year
old German struts, year old front calipers, rotors and pads plus rear
cylinders, and a new battery, I'm in a position where my only recourse is to
scrap the poor thing. Oh, it's a 5 speed. If I'm lucky, I'll get just
enough for it to (hopefully) cover what I owe the guy to have done what's
he's done for me.

The car is located just south of York, PA. (PA titled and registered) If
there is anyone on the list that is close by that has an interest in this
vehicle, please call me at 412-877-6265 ASAP. Leave me a message and I'll
get back to you as quick as I can. I doubt if I can let it sit in his
parking lot longer than this weekend. If I can get $500 for it I'll be
happy. Otherwise, off to the scrap yard it goes.

PS - Come to think of it, it's starting to make sense now. If the engine
was indeed out of a Dasher that is... Because the Dasher engine is
longitudinal. I have in my possession another injector pump which has one
of the mounting holes broken off. Still have the broken piece too. I had
wondered how this pump could have been broken like this... The only
explanation is the Dasher was involved in a severe front-end collision.
This would damage the pump as well as the crank, and indeed explains why the
intermediate shaft pully had a gouge in it. In spite of this, the engine
was pulled and somehow wound up in this Rabbit. The only unknown is whether
or not the previous owner knew this. I intend to let him know.
