you must be a youngster Jon, most of us on this list are much to old to work in those conditions. the north side of my house is an ice box as well. ha ha.
Thanks again to the list, my alternator pulley nut came off with some persuasion using the 1/2 impact gun and 22mm impact socket and my boot holding it still.
swapped pulley halves over to the rebuilt Bosch unit after rust removal, rust killer and paint.
Found rubber down pipe from head to water pump with T to feed the oil cooler was leaking pretty good so had to dump the coolant in the motor and replace that with a spare I had from an old scrap car I raided. So, if I had to do that outside on a block of ice, it would NOT have been happening.
lots of other fixing and rust stopping, new timing belt, set pump to 1.00mm advance and she fired up with 3 cranking attempts.
the 92 1.6TD Jetta is back on the road again for another winter driver.

Oh yes! Everyone will know when this problem is solved. I will do a dance of joy if the head doesn't have to come off! This car is in my friend's driveway which is on the north side of the house. It's parked on a sheet of ice that doesn't look like it will melt for a while. Also, we'll have to move the bio diesel reactor out of the garage - to use the garage - if we get the motivation to get to it this winter. He's got another tdi where the alt pulley just seized so we've been dealing with that. Plus, another friend's rear brakes just seized-up after taking it to a shop, so this 'stick' project keeps getting pushed off. I do want to thank everyone for the thoughts! I don't usually contribute, but I enjoy reading about the adventures of the group! The people here are so knowledgeable questions are usually answered before I have a chance to chime in. Jon
