There is another option in rebuilding. Cylinder Sleeves are available for these engines so you might want to check on that. Other than that you might rebuild the turbo with new seals and gaskets, of course replace timing belt, tensioner and water pump while you are at it. I mean if you are going to have the engine torn down, why not do it right. BTW I didn't realize that the steel head gaskets for the TDI come in different thicknesses. Besides, the TDI operates more efficiently at lower compression pressures than the old IDIs due to better atomization of the fuel, more precise timing, not pre chambers and that really funky deep hole in the middle of the piston that kind of servers as a pre chamber.
