[Vwdiesel] [Audi-VW-Diesels] Head Bolts and more

Ok, I am having more and more fun with this.
I pulled the head on the second engine. Found a couple things so far:
*Without the head, the engine rotates nice and smoothly. This is good!
*There is some surface rust in cylinders 1 and 4. In 1, there isn't a ton (like, it doesn't look like it is deep into the cylinder wall, but it is also not smooth to the touch). It looks like probably if a hone passes through it it will go away fine. Four is a little less.
I think this means that honing and rings are for sure in order. Guess I still need to think about whether or not I want to throw the $55 bearing set in there.
*It had the old style, reusable bolts. (Allen head, not 12-point.) If it were you, would you re use those, or go with the gasser ones I ordered, or order stretch diesel bolts from elsewhere?
*The flywheel end of the crank has some thin surface rust where the seal would be. Ironically, I took the plate off this particular engine a few years ago thinking I needed it for a different project. Think a little bit of steel wool will be sufficient to clean up that rust so the seal doesn't leak later?
Other interesting notes from my time in the garage today:
*In the old engine, I was mistaken about the odd bolt. It wasn't the older style, it is the newer,12mm style. Someone drilled and tapped one bolt hole bigger for some reason.
*For kicks, I took the head off the extra block I grabbed yesterday. It had problems too, one of the valves broke off #1, bounded around a bit, and became lodged in the head sideways! This engine, per the code, came out of a Vanagon, so surely it worked pretty darn hard. Added a couple pics to the album for your carnage-viewing pleasure.

I was at the auto parts store ordering all the stuff for the Banana Rabbit Rebuild (*however far that takes me).
One of the things I knew I would use would be a head gasket and bolts. They didn't list any of the 11mm bolts for a diesel rabbit. But I recalled someone saying here that gasser bolts were somehow better, or at least just as good.
So I had him look up bolts for an '85 Jetta gasser. They were the same diameter and length (11x96) so I had him get a set.
So was I right in my memory? How, if at all, are they better? Or is it, as I'm starting to think as I type this, that it is the raceware studs that are better and you have to order them for a gas engine?
*I've been talking to a gentleman who is known around the local VW club as being somewhat of a guru in the old bunny engines. He has about talked me into simply rebuilding the second engine (honing, rings, bearings) though some of you guys about have me convinced otherwise!
I think my newest plan is to pull the head in engine #2. The head I pulled off #1 looks really good, I didn't even see any cracks between the valves so I imagine odds are it is better. This gives me a chance to look inside a bit and see what I see.
If everything looks bright and shiny where it should be, I will probably first try putting the good head on it and go from there. If it looks like there could be some benefit to going further, then I will.
