The bearings are pressed in and pressed out. You can take a tool set (forget the name) that has diskes with on offset on them to keep the thing you are hitting in there centered. Good for seals and races and in this case bearings. Also you have to take the plug out on the tranny side of the block. And for the record-learning the hard way- there is two different sizes of the bearings. I think the smaller one is nearest the tranny. I attempted and messed up the new one by starting the bigger one in there not even looking at the differences. I had to put a older one back in there. Not a good practice and the older one actually did have a couple missing pieces to it. But I was crunched for time (end of an internship 750 miles from school) so I had to get it done. So, yes the bearings do get bad, yes you have to press them out with the tool to hammer them out. They aren't tight but if they aren't centered just right they can get stuck in and out and yes you need to pull the engine out to get the shaft out. Good to pull the oil pan too as you are liking going to have to fish out the bushing.
