[Vwdiesel] Banana Rabbit-Sinking Feeling...

Yes, as Loren pointed out to me, this isn't a chevy... ignore the thrust
bearing comment, someone in Volkswagen put it in the wrong place, but it's
likely broken around the flywheel end, as the flywheel is the last thing
that wants to stop when the other end gets stopped... so it dissipates the
energy in the flywheel by twisting the crank most likely to failure, at
least bent. It shouldn't involve the transmission at all, as it has very
little inertia compared to the flywheel.

As Stephen sez, trans has nothing to do with it. Crank probably broke at the
end, around the thrust bearing.
No worries, it has to come apart anyway.

Today I was showing a friend the carnage in the engine. As we talked, I
mentioned that I had noticed that the thing stopped on TDC, that the zero is
right at the center of the hole.

But as we talked about the oddity of this, I realized that all of the
pistons are somewhere in the middle of their stroke. None are anywhere near
TDC!

So I'm afraid that there could be damage inside the transmission too-if the
engine stopped suddenly but the car was moving, I don't know what could
happen.

I suppose there is the possibility that the crank broke somewhere, though
that isn't immediately evident. Failing that, I'm hoping that the clutch is
only mangled instead of the insides of the transmission.

Either way, I'm not moving forward until I know the status of the trans.
Which means pulling that out next, I guess.
