40 MPG in a Prius seems low, but not unreasonable considering they were
going 75 MPH into a headwind and over mountains. Also there was the whole
bit where he ran it out of gas - I can imagine that might have negatively
impacted MPG (discharge and recharging the battery)
On the other hand, I can't imagine what Consumer Reports could have possibly
done to a TDI to get as low as 34 MPG out of it.
