I would agree, get it inspected by an experienced rebuilder. I used one in
Portland, OR. A complete rebuild was somewhere around $900.

Tad, pump re-sealing OR pump re-build will only be know when you get the
pump
apart and a SKILLED rebuilder will be able to see internal wear on any
physical
parts. Most important, be sure a trusted shop works on the pump that has
done
many of them in the past. They will be able to tell you if you just need
new
seals or you have additional internal parts that will need to be replaced of
they are out of wear specifications.
I have had a few pumps done by this shop. Michael is the rebuilder and
owner.
He had done many 1.9TD and TDI pumps.
Very honest and fair guy.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] TDI injection pump leaking
Greetings all, and happy new year!
I have an 01 Golf TDI with ~167k. For quite a while now, I've had a minor
off-and-on shaft seal leak (really more of a "seep") which I attributed to
my use of B99 and seal swelling issues related to switching between b99 and
lower blends.
Well, with the recent onset of cold weather and switch to B50 by my
supplier, I have noticed a pretty significant leak coming from some
un-seeable place on the under/back side of the pump - I assume it's the seal
between the lower and middle sections. The whole lower portion and belly
pan of the engine are pretty well soaked, and when idling I can see a drip
every 10-15 seconds coming off the bottom of the pump.
So, it's clearly time to do something about it... the question is, reseal
the pump or go for the gusto and do a complete pump rebuild (and T-belt job
along with it)?
I know the pump has to come off the car to do these seals, and after talking
to my mechanic he recommends doing the rebuild due to the miles on the pump
and the reseal being a "bandaid". Also I'm due for a T-belt at 180k so it
would save a couple hours labor to do it all at once.
I trust this guy and he has a great rep, but I know that he's looking at it
from a mechanic's POV... and I don't mean he's trying to make more money off
me, but he wants to do it once and do it right.
So... Any opinions? Assuming I'm not going to be DIYing this job, the pump
is going to be done by someone who knows what their doing, and he's quoting
me about a grand for the whole deal.
Thanks for any input.
