[Vwdiesel] Top Seal Rings WAS: AHU Improvements

I think total seal has always recommended all 3 rings for best performance,
but in the land of low drag, high sealing capability, where a bug`s hair
less friction equates to that elusive half horsepower that everyone lusts
after, a top ring only has been the way to go.
I`ve been running non-total seal low tension 1.2mm wide `L` cross-section
rings in the stock car motor on fancy pistons with spectacular results for 3
years now. It doesn`t have to be total seal, but there are alternatives to
conventional setups that are pretty good too that are fairly application
specific.
Some stuff I`ve read suggest you could leave the second ring out entirely as
it does nothing other than have parasitic drag, and getting lower pressure
under the first ring helps it seal better than if there was a second ring
there....but the cylinders and rings better make a darn good circle.

Stress on the rods? That's almost as good as the too much compression
story. A VW bottom end is, shall we say, quite robust. A half point is
negligible, as rings sure are no replacement for a blower.

Just some clarification, the company is TOTAL Seal, here. There is also
a "Top Seal" ring manufacturer out there, but they do just stockish
rings to my knowledge.

I've heard that you don't want to do both compression rings with the
total seal design, just one or the other? Something about not enough gas
pressure getting past the top ring to completely seat the second ring.
The two piece rings take a tad more pressure to "seat" against the
walls, so the claimed net effect of running both compression rings with
the total seal design was that you actually lost a bit of compression.

Has something changed, and all three rings are now recommended?
