Affirmative Stephen, they are wedgemated, not keyed. The woodruff keyslot
is there to index the cam to the grinding fixture.

Not really an oddity at all. So far as I know, there isn't supposed to be a
key there, just like there isn't one on the IDI engines.
The sprocket just has a taper lock on the camshaft, rather than being
pinned, so you can adjust the camshaft to crankshaft relationship however
you must so as not to have valves meet pistons.

So I am disassembling my 98 TDI when I pulled the camshaft gear....and there
is no KEY! They keyway hole is on the camshaft side, but the gear is smooth,
no place for a key at all!
