Yeap, as long as you have good int. shaft bearings and main bearings, the
things that will cause the oil light and buzzer to go on when using thin oil.
When I run AMSOIL 20W-50 in the none winter months, no light, no buzzers.
when I run 10W-40 or 30 I get the buzzer after things are hot and I am sitting
still.

Will,
Why don't you run a 5w-30 diesel oil. It would help with your severe cold
temperatures. I have ran it in my 91 turbo jetta with no issues and it
cranks right up at 12 degrees F. Not as cold as what you see but at least
it would be better. I even did a used oil analysis with it running the
5w-30 and it showed no issues for running a 30w over a 40w. Besides, my
owner's manual even states to run a 10w-30 in "Artic" conditions, which is
any time temps are below 0F.

update: The little 100w oil pan heater isn't enough to warm up the oil
in the 4 hour block heater timer window, but if I leave it plugged in
ALL THE TIME, it will keep the oil from cooling down and things are
working well (of course, it's been above 0F)
