Give the smoke a sniff. That'll tell you a lot. If it smells sweet, you
have a
leaking head gasket again. If it smells mostly like diesel, you have
unburned
fuel, which at startup, in cold or cool weather, is usually accompanied by
one
cylinder "missing" and is generally a bad glow plug and possibly, but less
likely,
an injector.
If it smells like burned oil, then valve stem seals, turbo seal, (not
highly likely)
or as I experienced once, rings.
Unlikely your timing's off since it was a sudden change. A bad injector
(really
bad) will make much more knocking in its cylinder. It can sound like a bad
rod bearing.
