i've seen lots of Overland 1.9 heads with small oval intake ports.
Non of them ever looked welded...
they were cast, in mexico, like that,  most likely for Overland. 

what is weird to me is ......why weld the better larger D shaped intake ports to be smaller,
when it's far easier to weld up, then port, then resurface,  a 1.6 diesel vanagon intake manifold ( if it's going in a vanagon )  to mate perfectly with the larger D shaped ports on a 'real' 1.9 head  ?

I've done it numerous times .........works out just great. 

somebody will be able to use this head that's for sale I'm sure.

  I have the SAME head on my 1.9NA from Overland.  028 head, it is a 1.9TD or NA 
  head all around.
  They also drilled out and tapped holes around the edge of the head to install 
  M10 studds so it would take the old 1.6 style valve cover and not the 1.9 with 
  the 3 center posts.  On mine they did that anyway.

  that is a new head all around in my book.

  AAZ head (1.9TD- NOT tdi!!). But here is the thing- the intake ports were welded 
  smaller so it can run the 1.6 TD intake manifold. I think Overland was doing 
  this several years ago. You could run this on a 1.6TD or a 1.9TD (or NA i 
  suppose! this is a hydraulic head, of course)

  I put this on a rig that was said to be good but "just needed a head." I ran it 
  about an hour and the bottom end was shot- poor compression, blew smoke, etc. So 
  this is used, but hardly. I guarantee it to be in top shape, as-new quality and 
  condition. Yep, that good. 

  $550 shipped. Will include a set of new OEM head bolts. 

  email if interested. Will entertain offers or trades for ammo or handcrafted 
  steel bicycles :-)
