You don't have to run it through the gears, and the procedure used is 
correct. The VAG-COM is to read the trans temp, should be around 30C. More 
and the trans is underfilled, less and it's overfilled. You can also use an 
infared thermometer for this, point it at the bottom of the pan and read the 
temp.
