The 1.6/1.5 diesels vs earlier gas don't share timing belt stuff  largely 
because 
the diesel belts are considerably heavier and a bit wider.  Maybe VW's  
getting 
more like other automakers and not sharing their own parts inventory (for  
internal 
savings) and making more and more parts for cars (for higher potential  
profits)??
