[Vwdiesel] A/C valve question and wanted

On the lines of A/C...
In the Banana Rabbit, I had to disconnect the compressor to pull the engine out, due to how the lines were run. There was actually a bit of pressure that was in the system, which says to me that there is potential for the system to work if filled.
In the mean time, I had some A/C work done at my house and I noted that they didn't pull any kind of vacuum, just filled the system back up after the work.
So, I know on a car it is SOP to pull a vacuum on the system before filling, but I wonder if it is necessary? Perhaps the vacuum is just a diagnostic thing, making sure there are no leaks.
Any reason I couldn't get some of the r-12 replacement stuff and fill it up to try it out?
