[Vwdiesel] Oil Pressure

Chris,
Sounds like it is getting tired and the I-shaft bearings are getting worn.
>From what I have seen the Mains and rod bearings on these engines seem to be
bullet proof and do not wear much but the I-shaft ones do causing oil
pressure issues.
I have a 91 Eco jetta and had it rebuilt. The shop must have not properly
installed or just didn't bother to install new I-shaft bearings. I have had
oil pressure issues from the start. I put a manual gage on the oil port at
the head and at idle I have 5psi and at 70mpg I have 15psi. It has been this
way for 70k miles now.
You seemed to have covered it but I'm sure more will chime in with better
knowledge than me.
Nick
Hi guys (and any gals?);
My 92 Ecodiesel with 380K miles on it: last week the oil pressure light and
warning buzzer started flashing / sounding while driving. This is a
"2-stage" oil pressure warning system. There is a low (idle) sensor that
looks for a bare minimum then turns off. Then there is a "dynamic" sensor
that looks for oil pressure to be above 1.2 bar when you hit 2000 rpm. It's
this second dynamic sensor that is causing the warning.
I've trouble shot the warning system / senders and it appears that the
warning is NOT faulty - I don't think I have the tools to measure oil
pressure directly, but I've used my electrical tool with two known dynamic
sensors plus the original sensor and the sensors don't open until well above
2000 rpm's (again - no way to measure RPM's, but engine is turning pretty
quick before switch opens). When I manually ground the wire, the buzzer
turns off. So I read that as a working warning system, yes?
I don't see any leaks / puddles, oil level is fine, engine temp is fine
while running. I did drive it about 40 minutes on the highway to get it
home when the buzzer started (after I didn't see anything catastrophic under
the hood), so there's enough oil pressure in the short term to keep it
running.
So my question to you collective smart people is this:
Are there any easy / relatively cheap fixes or diagnostics that I should
consider on this engine?
Anything that I should check before I decide that the engine is tired and
pressure issues are because engine wear or intermediate shaft bearing
doesn't allow it to hold pressure?
I don't want to put a lot into an engine with that many miles on it, so
thought I'd ask you guys before looking for a long block or different
vehicle... but it still started even in the coldest winter days this year,
so I think compression is still good, although I haven't measured that
either.
Thanks in advance!! You guys are the best!!
Chris
