  Forever is almost close!  ;-)  I've replaced few bearings but most have 
been just 
because it was getting new drums.  Letting them get really loose is the 
only thing 
I've seen cause one to fail so far.  That's one thing I've found is, 
getting them 
tensioned properly.  Get it to what seems right and in a few 
hundred/thousand 
miles, rock the top of the tire in/out and it'll clunk/wobble.  Tighten the 
bearing 
nut a few degrees and all is fine for a couple thousand more.  After the 
3rd or 
4th time it's usually good for a couple years.
