I've used both.  Found that the bolt I used needed the  diameter reduced 
just a pinch 
and it worked better with the end ground flat.  Keep it in my tool box  
even!  Sockets work 
but tend to be rounded on the end so harder to hold in place.  The  recess 
in the mounting 
bracket is really shallow so flat on the end, really helps.
