[Vwdiesel] busted windshield wipers

folks,

this morning, on a dark and rainy morning, my wipers on my 85 VW jetta
began to quit working.  First the passenger one quit moving, while the
drivers side performed well.  Then the drivers side began to stop moving as
well.  The wiper would catch occasionally,  but mostly would just jitter a
couple centimeters either way.  When I got to work I took a quick look
under the hood and the motor seemed to be functioning properly, and the
rotating arm was moving.  Any ideas on where to look next, and if this is a
common problem, what to do about it?
