[Vwdiesel] High pitched squeal when driving 020 tranny in 5th gear

I am embarrassed to report that my 020 transmission was 1 1/2 quarts low. I started off with 8 ozs, and then kept adding and checking until is was right (total of 48 ozs). Wen I first opened the speedometer cable hole, I could not see any oil. I just returned from a 10 mile test drive and all seems OK, unless I am already totally deaf and I cannot hear the noise that the transmission is making.
Gut feel says to inspect whatever is required to inspect. Will also take to lift and inspect to see where leak is located. ken

Ken, sure sounds like belts to me. The MKII 1.6NA and TD's are notorius for these squeeling belts in all sorts of odd times and conditions.
I do not think this is a bad issue with 5th gear.
the one thing I will say is I seem to get most of my belt squeels in lower gears, not in 4ht and 5th.
The pulley's wear in odd ways as the motors get 200,000 miles on them and cause many of these belt issues on Alt., water pump and PS belts.

When the oil is low doe 5th gear squeal or whine? Hoping for the best and
will update after check and test. Wish me luck. ken
They're usually just noisy, maybe a bit rattly or growly but never heard
one squeak. Did you try going back into 5th a couple times to see if it
repeated? Changes in load, by shifting gears can certainly affect slipping
belts. Other possibilities could be the clutch (load and slippage increase
in the taller gears but they don't tend to squeak either) or maybe a CV boot
rubbing itself or something.
Tight bushings will tend to squeak but most of the tranny is bearings.
