First of all, I think you wasted your money on an EGR valve because it can't really have an effect on the cruise in any way. Duty cycle for the EGR is almost off at highway speeds and even if it were to be wide open, it couldn't effect the car the way you described. Now, from experience with my own 04 Jetta BEW, I can tell you that what your probably dealing with is the in tank lift pump. I had the same cruise problem with mine: Wouldn't hold speed, if you touched the accelerator it would rapidly try to speed up to the set speed and sometimes over shoot it. Well after trying to blame the problem on a number of things, including the reprograming done with the cold start remedy recall, I saw a post on TDI club about the lift pump. Long story short, the OEM pumps don't have a bypass or they have only a small bypass if the lift pump stops working or the screen inside of the pump is clogged. I first tested mine by removing the lower rear seat cushion, then removing the access cover over the fuel sender/lift pump. Next simply turn on the key while holding your hand on the lift pump, you shouldn't have to start the car as the system starts up with the glow plugs or just beyond the glow plug stop. You should be able to feel it pump up or at the very least, hear it pumping the system up. When I tested mine, it was dead. After replacement, cruise works perfectly. This also smoothed out some idle issues and hard start issues I was having. Hayden

>>> Hi all;
>>>
>>> TDI question - I picked up an '04 TDI Jetta last spring after I started
>>> having oil pressure issues with my '92 Eco - took the dive into the
>>> electronic world. Since purchase, cruise control worked, but wouldn't
>>> hold
>>> the speed - worse against the wind, with the air on, or up a hill.
>>>
>>> Took it to dealer mechanic in this area who diagnosed a "sticky" EGR
>>> valve,
>>> which limits the acceleration and the small acceleration adjustments
>>> rather
>>> than any problem with the cruise control. I left there thinking I'd
>>> replace
>>> that valve myself, however I noticed that as I left the dealership that
>>> day
>>> and the next few that the cruise worked and car accelerated better, but
>>> within a week or two it slowly returned to losing speed when cruise was
>>> on.
>>>
>>> So I ordered and replaced the EGR valve, and everything worked well. For
>>> about 2 weeks, and now its returning to losing speed on the cruise. Last
>>> night I unplugged / replugged in the electrical connection to the EGR,
>>> thinking that like many old electrical connections, maybe something loses
>>> contact over a few weeks. After this, the cruise and car worked better
>>> again.
>>>
>>> So does that sound feasible? The connector looks good, solid. There's no
>>> corrosion on it. They're very tiny pins, so hard to tell if I could bend
>>> the surrounding slot sides in to get better contact. Anyone else run into
>>> this, or have another thought? Anything else that might be making the EGR
>>> goofy that I should check?
>>>
>>> Thanks for any feedback!!
