Hi Loren;
I once put a pyro on a 1.6 N/A in a Dasher. You had to torture the
car lugging it uphill to get to 900 F. Not so on a stock 1.6 Jetta turbo
setup in a 1981 Rabbit pickup with a tall FF 5 spd tranny. My 9Q Quantum
tranny in the new Fox isn't quite as tall so I might get further up the
passes without shifting but I believe 4th gear at 50 mph will handle most
climbs. The Isspro Pyrometer I have in the Fox was designed by an engineer
at Isspro for his diesel turbo rabbit. It is marked for after turbo mounting
of the probe and is yellow from 1000 to 1100 and red beyond that.
The thermosticly controlled sandwich plate and oil cooler plus hoses
about a foot long with 90 degree bends at the cooler is from a gas turbo
Volvo. I bought it for about 40 bucks from a friend. I did spend another 70
bucks at my local hydraulic store getting a couple of 3 foot extensions made
but it fits easily and works perfectly. We bracketed up the air to oil
cooler under the hood striking plate on the passenger side behind the
grill.

Best mileage I would expect to be closer to 60 mph. No turbo
diesel likes your foot in the pump so I'm sure in the big mountains I will
be slowing down and using 4th and in the steepest grades even 3rd.
As long as your EGT stays below 1,100F they don't mind, your fuel gauge
may object though! ;-)
I seriously doubt you'll find a hill you'll ever need 3rd, and most
likely not
4th either. Not unless you get slowed behind a truck or slow curve
driver.
They just pull and pull. Even my Rabbit will take Blewett Pass in 4th
and 5th
so long as I don't get pushed below 55 to 60mph, by some slow driver.
Sounds like a really fun ride Brian! Is that oil cooler sandwich just a
used
car pull off/bolt on? Sounds perfect!
Loren
