Depends on the year.  The earlier TDI's don't have that  flywheel, or you 
could go 
for an automatic, which have their own shortgevity issues.  ;-)
 
  I like my Passat so well that I'm unlikely to add another older one  
unless it's 
just a good deal.  The newer ones have other issues, so I'm happy with  
what's 
still a 15 yeaer old car.  Seems every time I think I'm getting  something 
newer, 
it's still at least 15 years old.  Sigh
