[Vwdiesel] 91 Jetta TD Clutch

Just a little side note. On the way to the gym this morning my clutch did a
weird thing. I went to change gears and as I pushed the clutch in I felt a
pop in the clutch pedal and the pedal stayed down against the floor. I
couldn't get the jetta into gear and I was moving at about 30mph at the
time. I was able to pull the pedal back up with my foot and when I went to
push it back in it didn't feel as tight as it had before. I was able to
get it back into gear and from that point on it will shift but the clutch
now seems to be weaker, if that makes sense as in the pedal resistance isn't
as strong as it once was and it seems to grab way sooner than it did before.

I just replaced the self adjusting clutch cable over a year ago. When I
checked where it connects to the transmission I can pick up on that lever
some really easy. Is there an internal spring inside the transmission that
pulls the clutch arm up? Like I said, it is shifting fine but not in the
same way that it has been. The transmission is the original 5sp that came in
the car and has 238k miles on it. The fluid has been changed three times
since I purchased the car back 8 years ago and I replaced the clutch and
pressure plate and had the flywheel resurfaced.

I'm lucky because I was 20 miles from home and I was able to go to the gym
and come back home. So now what does anyone suggest? I'm thinking there is
an internal spring inside the transmission that broke. I'm not familiar with
these so I'm not sure about that, just a guess. If it is an internal issue,
is this something I can replace or should I find another 5sp?

Thanks,

Nick
