Well I was going to suggest the GM one wire, but I didn't realize the part
about having to rev it up to work. I even googled it to make sure I was
thinking of the right thing!

A few years ago I "had" to put one on a MF 135 tractor. They had charging
issues constantly so made a decision to be done with the problems and put
a "one wire" alternator on the tractor. When It was handed to me, I
checked things out and told Dad that replacing the alternator wasn't going to fix
anything and that it still wouldn't charge. The B+ wire had been spliced
several times and wasn't conducting all the way to the alternator!
The regulator and wires going to it were all fine. I tried to convince
them to let me fix the wire and return the new alt. Especially after being
told it had to hit higher rpm before starting to generate. Dad was
agreeable but my uncles weren't so I fixed the wire and replaced the alternator.
It's been more temperamental to dirt, sometimes doesn't get run to
charging rpm and at one point I almost changed it back! Cleaning the brushes off
and blowing it out, seemed to fix it. :-P
