A few years ago I "had" to put one on a MF 135 tractor.   They had charging 
issues constantly so made a decision to be done with the  problems and put 
a "one wire" alternator on the tractor.  When It was  handed to me, I 
checked things out and told Dad that replacing the alternator  wasn't going to fix 
anything and that it still wouldn't charge.  The B+  wire had been spliced 
several times and wasn't conducting all the way to the  alternator!
  The regulator and wires going to it were all fine.  I tried to  convince 
them to let me fix the wire and return the new alt.  Especially  after being 
told it had to hit higher rpm before starting to generate.  Dad  was 
agreeable but my uncles weren't so I fixed the wire and replaced the  alternator.  
It's been more temperamental to dirt, sometimes doesn't get  run to 
charging rpm and at one point I almost changed it back!  Cleaning  the brushes off 
and blowing it out, seemed to fix it.  :-P
