Actually, once you start adjusting max boost, you can do well with an
intercooler to increase density. They are win -win- denser cooler air in
gives more power and cooler out.
A touch more fuel may add quite a bit of temperature to the egt the way
things are now, if you are way overtimed and very fuel limited, just be on
the lookout for that- with lots of timing, the egt climbs very quickly.
The stock vw turbo setup is very well regulated to 10psi, but with a kkk or
any other outboard wastegate actuator you can adjust the actuator rod to get
what you want.
I second the motion, Andrew's modified VNT is very very very much what the
stock motor needed from factory. This is why our vw's react so very well to
more fuel- more exhaust pressure accelerates the turbo speed at a quicker
rate, and more exhaust is all you have to get more boost sooner. With a vnt,
you can get almost the same thing without more fuel by changing the
efficiency of the turbo, getting boost on faster, less smoke, more power.
Andrew's setup is waaay cool, and would be my go to setup if I was replacing
a turbo in an older vw... (or my Peugot powered sprayer for that matter)
The VNT in my ford dually is so very responsive, makes that 6l what it is,
and vanes closing for exhaust brake is shockingly effective (I have the
banks setup to control that).

HI Nick;
I didn't have an 1.9 AAZ head ( rare and expensive?) for more air flow. My
turned down pistons do lower compression. It is apparently the larger
prechambers that cause the compression lowering in the Frankenmotor. I'm not
sure if I have a good 1.6 N/A head that I could port the hell out of to get
some more flow. My turbo Fox is defiantly a low budget affair. I'm pretty
sure I haven't got 1000 bucks in the whole project. After taking out about
half the depth of the swirl pockets in the pistons it has surely changed
something. This motor wants lot's of advance on the pump timing. We have it
set at 1.30 now. It is running good but I can't get the post turbo EGT to go
more than about 1100. I will dial up a little more fuel and see what that
does. I think a ported head and perhaps some water/methanol injection
coupled with a turbo with more boost will give me some more ponies. The
engine is strong now but another 20 or 30 horses wouldn't be a bad thing.

When I first read this the first thing I thought of was Hagards Hillbilly
tuning. That would have been my first try since it is a frankenmotor so to
speak.
