I do the same but use a mighty-vac to do this. Pull fuel into the pump to fill it via the Out banjo and once you have it full, put the correct Out Banjo back on and it will start very easily assuming timing and everything else is setup properly.
once it is running, crack each injector one by one with a rag on it to let some fuel out. This will help purge any trapped air in hard injector lines.
Make sure that you set your timing with the timing advance cable knob pushed all the way in towards the dash. !!

I use a spare IN bolt in the Out bolt hole along with a spare IN fitting
and an outboard primer bulb. It pulls the fuel right through the filter
and pump. Once there is a smooth flow I replace the OUT bolt and fitting
and without cracking the injectors it typically takes 10-20 seconds of
cranking to fire up.
