How fast would it need to spin? I can't remember but I think I put it at at least half throttle which is around 1700 rpm at the engine and it is about double at the alt due to pulley size. Maybe I will try tomorrow WOT to see if it shuts off. The light should go out correct? It was just a little tube bulb similar to a license plate light on the 04 golf in a tester.

It's been a while since I looked at one of those alts but as I recall, both large (B+) terminals are tied internally so connecting one, connects both (for testing, you'll want both when loading it.) The D+ will want power to it with your light in between. Other than possibly undoing the nut, I wouldn't necessarily think direction of rotation would matter since there's no commutator and it's constant contact with the brushes (rather than hitting the correct two windings' connections at the right lead in time.) It'll have to spin fast enough to start self energizing.

Ok, I was attempting to test the alt before hooking too much up to make things
work. First question-I am pretty sure it is not running the same direction as
the VW engine does. Would this matter? Seems what a google search says is no
other then the fan cooling may be affected and possibly the nut locking it on. I
had a wire hooked to the grounding pins then to the negative on the battery. I
had anther clip from the frame to the negative on the tractor. Then the two
larger spades on the alt were hooked to the battery and the exciter wire I
hooked to a test light then to the positive on the battery. The light didn't go
out and the alt wasn't giving a charge. It was 12.6 at rest and 12.5 running the
light to the exciter. Did I not hook something up correctly or does a VW alt
really care the direction it runs? I wouldn't think direction matters since it
is alternating current that the regulator brings to DC voltage. Thoughts? It is
rather hard to blow snow with no working wipers/
lights on the cab.
