Yes the trains may dump the electricity in a form of heat but storing it on board means you are pulling more weight and less cargo. Adding it to an electric line would mean lots of $$ to get that set up. Running the train totally on electricity would also be bigger $$ and the power to get the electricity still would be from coal, gas, wind, etc. Kind of interesting if you think about it. A coal train from WY to say Michigan running off of electricity from the very coal it is hauling. Also that makes it a mess with train intersections getting power to the train without obstructing or making it unsafe for vehicles to cross the tracks. More overhead power lines adds to the oversized load hauls headaches. Top it all of the US electrical grid is very out dated as well. Our infostructure in general is outdated (remember the I-35 bridge collapse in MN). The roads, bridges, power lines, water/sewer systems are all very outdated and need updating/repair but the cost is so huge it just gets delayed more and more. Different rant. I watch the history/discovery/new channels too much along with newspapers.
Travis.
