Travis, you make some very good points. I fully agree that our
infrastructure is terribly outdated. If we would spend our tax dollars on rebuilding
our infrastructure rather than on useless wars that DON'T make our country
any safer, we would have ended this recession/depression we are in. Also, I
feel it would be OK to expand our national debt, if necessary to rebuild
our infrastructure as posterity will benefit from a sound infrastructure that
we rebuild now. I am from Minn. & have driven several times over that
I-35W bridge that fell down. We should have a "Manhattan Project" to develop an
economical way to generate power from nuclear FUSION & an economical way
to build cars that run on fuel cells powered by hydrogen & save what fossil
fuels we still have for posterity.

First, we're like 14 TRILLION in the hole. I don't think adding to that
for whatever benefit, is going to pull us out of a recession/depression.
Try that on your home budget.
Second, government jobs don't net gain enough to balance out. They can
provide incentive and motivation that gets other things rolling but too
much is like some Amway people follow "Spend your way to prosperity". Not
many millionaires did it that way without a lot of "confidence." ;-)
That bridge fell down, not from lack of maintenance but from (can't
remember the exact name) binding plates that were I believe ONE HALF as thick as
engineering required. I now forget if they were mis-engineered or someone
read the print wrong and missed it in the inspection. Just look at the
findings and pictures. It's pretty obvious that 1" steel isn't enough to hold
the main supports together.
Nuclear fusion would be great but so far it only works in the
engineering section of warp class Starfleet wessels. Dumping money into it might
help but at current tech levels, it would probably just help fund more
research labs with no working reactors.
