That article made me think of The Radioactive Boy Scout about a kid who build a nuclear reactor in his parent's shed by stealing parts from smoke detectors and such.

The only hit I could find for "The Boy Who Played with Fusion" is on Ongo as
a Popular Science article. At first you might see a mountain scene picture
obscuring the article. It has a page scrolling control with a row of
horizontal dots and an > (arrow) on the right end. Click the arrow to get
rid of the mountain picture and read the article.

There is a very interesting article in the latest issue of Popular Science
which is "The Boy that Plays with Fusion". It is about a child genius boy,
now 17 years old, who built a nuclear fusion reactor, one of only 32 in the
would who have successfully done this. I would like some of you to read this
article & comment on this. Sorry, I don't have a link to this article.
If an economical source of nuclear fusion can be developed, it will be the
salvation of all mankind as it will provide an economical source of
non-polluting power that will be able to desalinate water from the ocean,
converting water into oxygen & hydrogen & thus provide an economical source
of hydrogen for fuel cells & other sources of power. This would effectually
end pollution from fossil fuels, & economically provide water for all the
arid areas of the world.
