Great explanation James.

My 01 Golf came with Continentals, which lasted about 40k.  Replaced
them with an identical 3+spare set, then opted for Michelins the next
time around.  IIRC they lasted about 60k, but cost more than 50% more
so wasn't really worth it.  Also I took a noticeable MPG hit - never
saw that before or since with new tires, especially ones that were
supposedly made for low rolling resistance. Also they tended to
develop leaks more than others.

Since then I've been running mid-line house-brand tires from Les
Schwab and I've been quite pleased with the performance, wet/dry/snow
traction, etc.  First set wore out early due to alignment issues so
can't really say how well they last.
