Travis hits a big issue here - these cars were a steal when they were
priced even with gassers. Now you've got to do the math carefully. For
about 6 months now, diesel has been between .50 to 1.00 more per gallon
here in WI. Combine that with the prices people are demanding for diesel
cars, and you quickly negate any savings with good mileage. I routinely
see people asking in the $10,000 range for '00-'04's with 200k miles on
them because they're in "mint condition". That's crazy... and I'm not
convinced that these cars will last that much longer than a comparable
gasser like in years past.
With the old IDI's the general public didn't understand or like them, so
they were dirt cheap at dealers all over the place. The TDI's are victims
of guys like us who brag about the savings and great driveability of a VW
diesel, and now they're priced beyond any of us. Plus the eco-nazi
emissions crowd has taken notice and put their crappy stamp on them now,
resulting in even more problems / less savings.
Just make sure you're going to put the miles on to make the investment work
out in your favor...
