Back in 1986 I towed an Eriba Puck travel trailer with my Mazda 626 diesel from LA to Mpls. to Winnipeg to Vancouver, BC to attend the World's Fair, then back to LA & averaged 31 MPG. However, the Eriba Puck, which I still own, is a light weight German built trailer, which I still own.
Winnebago did import a VW gas commercial chassis to build the Rialto motor home with. Too bad it wasn't a diesel. Also Mercedes does import the diesel Sprinter which several motorhome manufacturers modify for class B & C motorhomes. I think the "chicken tax" of 25% also applies to travel trailers & motorhomes which is probably why you see very few European diesel motorhomes & travel trailers. Back in 1971, Boulevard Buick, Long Beach tried to market a new Eriba Puck travel trailer with a new Opal for $3750 claiming one cent a mile fuel economy back in the days of .25 cent gas. This marketing attempt flopped & I bought my Eriba Puck on a closeout sale of $1000.
Travis, which model VW diesel did you pull the travel trailer with? That is real impressive, pulling a 3500 pound trailer & getting that MPG. Was that a car trailer or a travel trailer?
I see you are from Wisc. I have a favorite Internet radio station I regularly listen to out of Appleton, Wisc as they play the polka music 24 hours a day that I grew up with back in Minn. It is www.wrjqradio.com
