At the coal mine Cat and the rest that were retrofited used a plug in connected attached to the outside of the machine were a person could get at. There was male end and female end on the cord and offset some and same on the connector to the machine. Worked out nice really and then it was just hooked up in the system. 
 
Also I would think a solar battery tender would be nice for the gensets. Really cheap anymore. Could hook up outside still and work  and have a quick disconnect with the wire routed through the machine. Try hooking up a Harley battery without having this system-very hard. No jumping a Harley(just pushing).
