I agree with all that's been said in this thread - there's a majority of
society that doesn't want to think about things - they're much happier
being told what to think.
Comes largely from the desire to insulate people from pain or difficult
situations - we don't want accidents or people making bad choices while
driving, or suffering from their lack of skill or experience while driving,
so we create systems that check themselves, traction control to take over
the throttle and brakes, anti-lock brakes to prevent skids, airbags to
catch everything that does go wrong.  All are achievements and accomplish
worthy goals, but at the same time have the effect of cutting the human
element out.  Suddenly we HAVE to have those things or no one can drive.
And guess what - those things now cost a substantial part of what we make.
And there no longer is a choice...
The writing is on the wall - google cars are already driving themselves
around.  Soon you won't be able to choose cheaper transportation
alternatives, the cost will be fixed and you will have to pay a cost that
is determined for you.
