On that note, after writing that (but before cleaning up my radio) I did find that there was an issue with some of the Monsoon-equipped Jettas (and maybe Golfs).  The positive and ground wires on the car's wiring harness for one of the speakers were swapped!  It was this way from the factory!  So the cure was to go in, and flip flop the two pins on the wiring connector itself.  


Mine wasn't like that, it was just dirty.  (I double checked the connectors while the radio was out.)

The radio is factory, though I don't know about the speakers.  It might be worth a look to see if they have been changed-possibly wires got mixed up.
