Well, an 03 wagon tdi some say is one of the most desired TDI's really. Looked for a plugged intake manifold. Make sure you have records of the timing belt change correctly or get it done again. If shifting hard then make sure that it has enough oil in it and it doesn't smell burned. The "life time" fluid lasts around 150 so most say change with the timing belt (100K with upgraded belt-60K OEM). I would be questioning why a new engine had to be put in though. That seems poor maintenance possibly. TDI's don't like to not be worked on right. The IDI's are forgiving-TDI's aren't as much. Turbo vanes can also be sticky. Need to beat on the car some (Italian tune ups) once in a while. I hope it isn't OEM clutch and I hope a single mass flywheel with a good clutch was installed. Also Injectors on those last around 100K before they need new nozzles. Didn't see where you are from or where you are getting this from but there is foam in the fenders-come cause of the dreaded rust-take it out. Brother had both fenders replaced from those. I took mine out before there was an issue. The OEM factory things are galvanized but the replacements aren't . Also the IP can start to leak-not a cheap fix on these. Cams shouldn't be an issue till closer to 300K miles on the ALH. Same with oil pump drive chain. EGR's suck on all of these in my opinion. All told I would buy one again but I can't afford the asking prices right now. Make sure there is a metal belly pan installed or get one on there.
