[Vwdiesel] trunk lock (off topic)

  Ok, I have a problem w my trunk lock on my new to me
03 Jetta.  When I press the key fob I can hear the 
solenoid making noise but I can't open the trunk. What
am I missing?  This non operation is my biggest fear
w the door locks in an emergency and this is not giving
me much confidence in the reliability of these systems.
Any suggestions?
