[Vwdiesel] starter issue , one final thing

You might be on to something here Sandy;
My father's 1954 Ford used to do the solenoid clunk about once a
month and you had to get out and clean both the battery cables. It has been
a standard in my car trouble shooting for all these many years. If my car
was starting and running fine but one day I turn on the key and it doesn't
start I clean the battery cables.
In a Rabbit that has set for years and you try to start it and the
starter doesn't kick in a hammer on the case many times wakes it up.

The 12 volt current that goes to your ignition switch and fuse box to run
everything else in the car, comes off the clamp bolt at the positive
terminal of the battery via a medium size thick red wire.
This means the starter will "clunk", if that path is good.
HOWEVER, the fat cable that runs from the positive clamp on the battery
directly to the solenoid carries the actual cranking current.
Make sure it is ok, no corrosion at the solenoid lug or the battery clamp.
If in doubt, clip on a single booster cable between the + terminal on the
battery and the top terminal (battery) on the solenoid and try it.
It's always the last thing you try that works!
Sandy
